magnetic switch
Magnetic switches are electrical components that close conductive connections using magnetic fields and thus enable the targeted control of working circuits. They work completely non-contact and are characterized by their wide range of applications. At Dietz Sensortechnik you will find a large selection of magnetic switches for your individual needs. The different types of magnetic switches at a glance
The term magnetic switch summarizes various types of position switches that close or open under the influence of a magnetic field. Depending on the design, a distinction is made between different functions – on one side the reed contact and on the other fully electronic contactless sensors such as Hall, AMR and GMR sensor elements.
Reed switch:
A reed switch consists of two ferromagnetic iron-nickel alloy ferromagnetic contact tongues fixed at a minimum distance from each other in a vacuum gas-filled flask. If a magnetic field acts on the fine metal tongues, they pull on each other and close the contact. This allows the current to flow through the component.
A significant advantage of reed switches is their hermetically sealed design. This allows them to be used almost anywhere. Other plus points are their short reaction time and the possibility of working with high voltages thanks to vacuum filling.
Fully electronic sensors:
Fully electronic contactless magnetic switches like Hall sensors work fundamentally differently. They are equipped with a current-carrying semiconductor element and a permanent magnet that permanently maintains an electric field. If a magnetic object moves into this field, the strength of the magnetic field changes. This in turn changes the voltage in the semiconductor element. This voltage change can be used as a processable signal.
A significant advantage of the contactless functioning is its insensitivity to vibration, shock and impact, which ensures increased operational safety. Since the magnetic switches only react to the items supplied or semi-skilled, external influences and manipulations can be largely ruled out. This makes full electronic sensors particularly suitable for security applications. Last but not least, their freedom from wear and their long service life should be emphasized.

The right magnetic switch for every application area – the range of Dietz Sensortechnik
At Dietz Sensortechnik you will find a large selection of magnetic switches for a wide variety of applications. Our customers come from the following industries, among other things.
Automation technology:
In automation technology, magnetic switches are used where the operating conditions for classic mechanically operated switches are not optimal. Above all, areas with high temperatures and working environments that are difficult to access should be mentioned here.
automotive industry:
Another central application of magnetic switches is the automotive industry. They are installed in combustion engine starters, among other things. As soon as a current flows through the connected coil, the starter and flywheel connect and the closed contact powers the starter’s electric motor. This then drives the combustion engine until it continues to run independently.
Security Technology:
Due to their ability to react to changes in brightness in combination with optoelectronic components, magnetic switches are also installed in relays of motion detectors and alarm systems. If, for example, the incidence of light on a photo-electronic component changes due to unauthorized entry, a voltage is induced, which in turn leads to the formation of a magnetic field in a coil, to the end of the magnetic switch, the activation of the working circuit and the triggering of the connected siren.
pneumatics:
When operating compressed air cylinders, magnetic switches are used for position queries on cylinder pistons (cylinder switches). The switch reacts to a permanent magnet integrated into the cylinder head. As soon as the piston approaches the area of the switch, an electrical signal is generated, which is reused in the context of monitoring and control.
In addition, magnetic switches are used in many other areas. The following are particularly important here:
- Mechanical engineering
- Aviation
- Agriculture
- Test & Measurement Technology
- Medicine
- Telecommunications
- Household appliances
The right magnetic switch for your individual needs
We have summarized all the important product data for you under each of our magnetic switches. In the information sections you will find information on switching current, frequency, housing and design, among other things.
The main electrical parameters include the supply voltage. Not only the voltage level, but also the type of voltage (DC voltage, AC voltage) must be taken into account. Magnetic switches equipped with reed contacts can usually be used with both direct and AC voltage.
Another important aspect is the distance between the components. It indicates at what distance the contact opens or closes. The degree of protection must also be taken into account. It indicates how well the component is protected against water and the penetration of solids.
